And not just at the rehearsal, but on the set, which is located in a strictly classified place. At the Object X, which is located deep underground, there will be a recording of a video for the main song of the musical Captain. The composition itself is taken from the repertoire of 4POST, and it is performed by Dmitry Bikbaev the frontman of the group, the director of the “nuclear” musical. NUCKIDS are preparing for the video shooting with all the seriousness.
From the very morning young “atoms” began to rehearse. Together with Maxim Nedolechko, they practice the choreographic piece Captain, working on the sharpness of movements, plasticity, intensity of mise-en-scene and rhythm clarity. The author of the Captain’s song also repeats the dancing moves together with Nuclear Kids. “Today I came to the rehearsal room not as a director, but as a singer, to repeat all the movements of the dance together with the kids and Maxim. I want to memorize it thoroughly, because there will be no time to do it during the recording”.
The process of creating a video is very complicated: it’s no laughing matter. According to Dmitry, “only the setting up of lights, cameras and cranes exhausts completely, and you still need to perform everything with a hundred percent commitment, with frantic energy, and even with a maximum of two or three takes, because the recording time is very limited!”. “Atoms” will have only 7-8 hours for everything, which is very little according to the director. “That’s why it is necessary to do everything perfectly now at the dress rehearsal! – says Dmitry. – But, although I’m very worried about the kids, I’m still sure that they are so talented that they will definitely manage!”
As for the vocals, Nuclear Kids finished the complicated, polyphonic recording a few days ago. “It was very difficult! – Vlad from Snezhinsk shares his impressions. – I had to perform the solo part of the Captain, a strong man who gathered teenagers. His character, beliefs, and attitude had to be expressed only through his voice”. At first Vlad could not authentically portray the leadership image invented by the author of the song Irina Arkhangelskaya, but the producer and vocal teacher David Todua helped him. “I had troubles with it,” recalls the young singer. – But then David said: “Imagine that it is Michael Jackson, not you, in the recording studio. How would he record?”. I imagined… and I did it perfectly!”.
Understanding and “living” the song is very important for every performer, otherwise the audience will hear the words but will not know what they are about. This applies to classical and pop music, rap and jazz! “When a person has a musical soul,” says David Todua, “it doesn’t even matter what language they sing in. I explained to Thuyet from Vietnam what the song Captain is about, and she, having felt it, sang her part perfectly.” The singer’s personal experience is also important when recording a music video, so David advises, “The singer should sing in the video, not just open his mouth. Sing in full voice! And then there will be no falseness, which the audience will definitely notice!”
I’m sure Nuclear Kids will cope with the difficult task, because that’s why they are super cool! But where is the mysterious object for filming and what kind of entourage will be chosen for such a driving song as Captain? We’ll find out tomorrow! Don’t forget, there are 18 days left until the premiere of the musical…
