How does one make a musical perfect? Of course, it is necessary to properly organize all the scenes of the play, add light and sound, work out the musical pieces and determine the actors’ tasks. But for the production to come to life, it needs its first audience.
On August 31st in the Hungarian town of Tolna the first show of the musical Lomonosov’s Scroll took place. We decided to organize the show in the cultural center where the rehearsal period of the NucKids project took place. For the first time the audience will enter the hall where the kids have been rehearsing for days and nights to see what our atomic talents are capable of.
The last few days before the first show were very intense. The participants of the project had to fully feel the show, understand their characters and bring the musical literally to perfection. Five days before the first spectators arrived, the kids, who met for the first time two weeks ago, were already running the almost finished performance.
Large lighting devices, as well as radio microphones and lavaliers added some trouble. Now, in addition to performing acting tasks and musical acts, the participants of the project have to constantly think about whether the microphone is on and whether they are visible on the stage. In order for the musical to have a glossy picture, full commitment is required from all team members.
Another task before the first performance was to adapt the play from a large rehearsal space to a fairly compact stage. The musical Lomonosov’s Scroll was originally created by the team of the project with the aim to be performed in large theatrical venues, but for the first Hungarian audience it was decided to adapt the play for a small stage in the cultural center of Tolna. Thus, children had some more work to do, especially those who are responsible for the rearrangements and technical aspects of the play. But all the participants of the project are real professionals, so even such difficulties were solved successfully.
“For me, the first show of the musical went just fine! I never once sat down during the whole performance, because I was constantly moving the scenery. Very often I went on stage and helped the other kids with props, costumes and screens. It was hot backstage, so I was constantly running for water and bringing it to the children who were dancing so that they could catch their breath. I think that the performance went great. And our director said that everything went smoothly and well!”

The first show of the musical Lomonosov’s Scroll was held in a cozy and warm atmosphere. The parents and relatives of some of our Hungarian participants came to watch our first “audience run-through”, as they say in the professional acting community. In particular, the parents of Domonkosh and Borbala Rozhai came to support their children. Domonkosh is on the project for the 3rd time this year, and this time in the play he has a serious role of academician Miller, who opposes Lomonosov. The musical performance in which Domonkosh plays the key part was made only a few hours before the first show, but our atomic artist coped and the audience appreciated the piece!
“Our first performance was truly magical. The costumes were simply amazing, and I really liked my costume of Academician Miller. And in general, I am very pleased and honored to play such a big role in the musical and to be actually the antagonist of Lomonosov, the main character. The most difficult thing, of course, was to rap with Lomonosov. The text was written literally the day before the premiere, and in Russian. But everything went as well as possible! My parents came to support me from my hometown of Pécel, not far from Budapest. They said that the show was amazing!”

The first show of the musical Lomonosov’s Scroll went off with a bang! The city of Tolna thanked the kids for their performances, and the atomic artists themselves were in the spotlight. Now the children know how the audience reacts to their performance and can make it even better. And there is a major event ahead. The premiere in Szekszárd is very soon.
